Crude steel production in Germany fell by 10 percent in 2020

by David Fleschen

Crude steel production in Germany fell by 10 percent in 2020 compared with 2019. This was the third year in succession that crude steel production fell. In addition, at 35.7 million tons, it remained below the 40 million ton mark once again, as in the previous year, reaching the lowest production level since the crisis year 2009.

There have recently been signs of a recovery in the steel economy. However, the 9 percent increase in crude steel production in the fourth quarter of 2020 must be seen against the background that the prior-year period had already been exceptionally weak.
